DMU ranks in top 10 for student and graduate startups

De Montfort University is among the top 10 universities in the country producing startups.

In total 131 businesses were started by DMU students and grads in 2021/22, according to data gathered by Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).

Loughborough University saw 14 startups and one spin-off (defined as “a company set-up to exploit IP that has originated from within the HE provider, where the HE provider continues to have some ownership”).

University of Leicester had nine startups.

The number of startups by students and graduates in our area totals 154, which is down from 2020/21 (175).

Simon Baines, DMU’s Enterprise manager, said:

“During the pandemic, engagement in our activities which encourage entrepreneurship and self-employment grew significantly. 

“To retain a high level of engagement in the year when we were faced with the complexities of returning to physical delivery feels like a huge achievement, and we are grateful to every student and graduate who took the opportunity to engage with us during such challenging times”.
