The number of startups coming out of Leicestershire universities is down for a third year in a row.
De Montfort University is again amongst the top 10 universities in the country producing startups but its 104 new startups by students and graduates in 2022/23 is much lower than the 131 formed in 2021/22.
According to figures published by Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), Loughborough University had 17 startups (up 3 from last year) and the University of Leicester had 12 (up three from last year also).
No Leicestershire institution developed a spin-off, which is where a company is formed to exploit IP that has originated from within the higher education provider and where the HE provider continues to have some ownership.
The number of companies coming out of Leicestershire universities this past year totals 133, which is down from 175 2020/21 and 154 in 2021/2.
Incidentally, our Research England funded project VentureVersity hopes to help these figures grow. Leicester Startups is currently working with the three local universities to help turn academic ideas into fully fledged startups.
